On Tuesday and Wednesday, 14 and 15 May, the Civil7 (C7) International Summit will take place in Rome at FAO Headquarters in the year of Italy\u2019s G7 Presidency<\/strong>. The event is organised and coordinated by\u00a0\u00a0GCAP Italy<\/a>, the Italian Coalition Against Poverty that chair the\u00a0C7<\/a>\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n

We are only six years away from 2030 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and\u00a0the world is facing a number of critical structural and systemic challenges<\/strong>, with large population groups such as women, children, youth and the most marginalised bearing the brunt of the current polycrisis.<\/p>\n

The cumulative impacts of climate change, economic shocks, the consequences of pandemics and the alarming increase in conflict and war have exacerbated already unacceptable social and economic inequalities. Gender inequalities are amplified, food security and even famine are increasing, fuelling forced migration and driving humanitarian needs to record levels. Prolonged public-private indebtedness is both a consequence and a further cause of the crisis. This complex situation, as an overall result, is slowing down and even reversing previous progress in leaving no one behind.<\/p>\n

In this context, the\u00a0G7 can be part of the problem<\/strong>, if it unilaterally promotes the interests of the most developed economies,\u00a0or part of the solution<\/strong>, if it defends human rights and the common interests of humanity and the planet for a more peaceful, just, sustainable and secure future\u201d \u2013 says\u00a0Riccardo Moro<\/strong>, C7 Chair. \u201cFor these reasons, the Summit represents a crucial moment of confrontation and dialogue of the C7 with the G7 delegation, with the institutional world, with the representatives of the economic and financial world and with other national and international civil society actors,\u201d Moro concludes.<\/p>\n

More than 400 people from around the world<\/strong>\u00a0are expected at the prestigious FAO headquarters for a two-day high-level meeting, both in terms of the depth of the topics to be covered and the depth of the speakers.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday 14 May<\/strong>, after the greetings and welcome by video message from FAO Director-General\u00a0QU Dongyu<\/strong>, the Summit will experience one of its most significant moments.\u00a0In the first plenary session, C7\u00a0<\/strong>Chair\u00a0Riccardo Moro\u00a0<\/strong>and C7 Sherpa,\u00a0Valeria Emm<\/strong>i will present and officially hand over the\u00a0C7 Communiqu\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0to G7 Sherpa, Ambassador\u00a0Elisabetta Belloni<\/strong>. \u201cThe Communiqu\u00e9 is a report containing the C7 recommendations addressed to the G7 that have been collectively elaborated by the\u00a0C7 Working Groups<\/a>\u00a0over the past months on different political priorities,\u201d says Valeria Emmi. \u201cIt is a true\u00a0manifesto that brings the excluded and the most vulnerable to the centre of the political debate\u00a0<\/strong>and expresses the strong will of\u00a0civil society<\/strong>, brought together in the C7, to play\u00a0an active role and offer a concrete contribution to policy makers in addressing the protracted and growing crises we are experiencing,\u00a0<\/strong>and the most urgent social, economic and environmental challenges of today and of the future\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 concludes Emmi.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0second session<\/strong>\u00a0is dedicated to\u00a0policy coherence for development<\/strong>\u00a0with a panel of keynote speakers including\u00a0Laura Aghilarre<\/strong>, Deputy Director-General for Development Cooperation at MAECI,\u00a0Maurizio Martina<\/strong>, Deputy Director-General FAO and\u00a0Marina Ponti<\/strong>, Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign. The two plenary sessions will be interspersed with\u00a0four parallel sessions<\/strong>\u00a0featuring sectoral experts from various continents who will explore the themes of\u00a0conflict in the Middle East<\/strong>,\u00a0human mobility and migration<\/strong>,\u00a0food justice<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0gender equity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday 15 May<\/strong>, the proceedings will open with the\u00a0third plenary session<\/strong>\u00a0devoted to\u00a0the international financial and fiscal architecture<\/strong>, which will feature, among other prestigious speakers, the Director General of the Fiscal and International Relations Directorate of the MEF,\u00a0Marco Iuvinale<\/strong>, representing the Minister of Economy and Finance, and, by remote link,\u00a0Geeta Sethi<\/strong>, Advisor and Global Lead for Food Systems of the World Bank,\u00a0Katherine Baer<\/strong>, Deputy Director, Fiscal Affairs Department, of the International Monetary Fund,\u00a0Martin Fregene<\/strong>, Director of Agriculture and Agro-Industry of the African Development Bank, and\u00a0Enrico Petrocelli<\/strong>, Head of International Institutional Relations of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.<\/p>\n

On the mid-morning of the 15th, the\u00a0four parallel sessions<\/strong>\u00a0will take place, addressing the topics of\u00a0climate justice, nuclear disarmament, humanitarian assistance and global health<\/strong>. The two days of work will conclude with the\u00a0fourth plenary session<\/strong>\u00a0during which the\u00a0theme of peace<\/strong>\u00a0will be addressed. A strong and important moment that will see the interventions of numerous civil society operators working for peace, that of\u00a0Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi<\/strong>, President of the Italian Episcopal Conference and Pope\u2019s envoy for the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, to which the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation\u00a0Antonio Tajani<\/strong>\u00a0has also been invited. The C7 Summit will finally close with the wishes of the Canadian civil society representative in view of the G7 and C7 presidencies in 2025.<\/p>\n

The C7 Summit 2024 is an initiative supported by the\u00a0UN SDG Action Campaign<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and is also supported with the contribution of the\u00a0Unione Buddhista Italiana<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(UBI)<\/em><\/p>\n
