Biography

Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1966. Graduated from International Christian University and received a master's degree in school of journalism of Indiana University, U.S.A. Joined Asahi Shimbun in 1992. After working in the Yamagata and Yamaguchi bureaus, Fukuoka's Social Affairs Department, and being transferred to the Okinawa Times, became the correspondent of the Asia Bureau in Bangkok, Thailand and Manila bureau chief in Philippines. In 2008, moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia as a freelance journalist. Published monthly magazine “Phnom” there and served as a PR advisor to the JICA Cambodia office.
In 2021, back to Japan and established own firm, Progress Communications. Working as a reporter, editor, and communications coordinator. After 2023, deputy editor-in-chief of “with Planet,” a news website run in collaboration with the Asahi Shimbun and the Gates Foundation. Also appearing as a news expert on FM radio J WAVE's “Jam the Planet” since 2022.
